The Vancouver Aquarium is a non-profit organization and is proud to be self-sufficient. Our earned revenues, such as revenues earned from the Upstream Café, directly support our education, conservation and research initiatives.

Ocean Wise
Ocean Wise is a conservation program created to help restaurants and their customers make sustainable seafood choices.
Sustainable seafood is caught or farmed in a way that ensures long-term
health and stability of that species, as well as the greater marine
ecosystem.
Look for the Ocean Wise logo next to the menu items so you can order guilt-free seafood.

The Upstream Café uses biodegradable and compostable dishes and utensils made from renewable resources.
Reducing waste generated by its food services has been one of the Aquarium's top priorities. For the most part, the main waste generated by most food establishments comprises plastic utensils, plates and non biodegradable packaging as well as leftover food. Five years ago, in a move designed to dramatically reduce serving-related waste, the Aquarium started using fully compostable serving products, and last year it added a public composting station for food waste.
Today 95% of the dishes and utensils used to serve food at the Upstream Café are fully biodegradable and compostable: This includes plates, bowls (made from sugar cane); cutlery, cold drink cups and salad containers (made from corn); and coffee cups and napkins (made from paper). Further, all new products used at the Upstream Café must be both compostable and made from renewable resources.
